A Well Deserved Honor

October 09, 2009 By: Phred Category: Uncategorized

Congratulations to President Obama for being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.  This is truly an honor and there is no person more deserving of winning this prestigious prize than our Beloved President.  In winning the Nobel Peace Prize, President Obama joins other deserving and peaceful winners of this prize such as Henry Kissinger, Woodrow Wilson, and Yasser Arafat.

Clearly, ordering an additional 17,000 Americans soldiers to fight in Afghanistan less than a month after assuming office is a major example of just how peaceful President Obama can be.  The President is also considering major troop increases for the Afghan War–perhaps as many as 30,000-40,000, another sign of just how committed to peace this man is.

Remember that other War, you know–the one in Iraq that you heard about daily when President Bush was in office?  Candidate Obama pledged to withdraw all of our troops from Iraq within 18 months.  We are now about half way to the 18 month timeline, and President Obama has made major progress towards his goal of a withdrawal (at his inauguration, 142,000 American soldiers were in Iraq–we now have ONLY 124,000).  Major troop withdrawals like this provide just another reason why President Obama deserved this award so much.

I for one am glad that the Nobel Prize committee chose to award the prize for rhetoric, rather than actions.  I for one am so tired of people who actually make the world a more peaceful place.  Its about time that someone was rewarded just for talking about problems, instead of doing something about them.

Nominations for this award had to be received by February 1st, 2009.  President Obama was inaugurated at noon on January 20th, meaning that he was awarded this prize for12 whole days of rhetoric.  If sending 17,000 more troops to war and 12 days of rhetoric can win a man a Nobel Peace Prize, is there any way that sending an additional 30,000-40,000 troops off to war and an additional year of rhetoric can prevent President Obama from winnning a second Nobel?

And get ready:  The Nobel Prize Committee will announce the winner of Nobel Prize in Economics on Monday.  If a man who sends thousands of soldiers off to die can win a prize for peace, the same man who’s economic policies have pushed the Nation to the brink of bankruptcy (while recreating the bubbles which just burst–thereby putting the economy at risk again) ought to be a lock to win the Nobel Prize in Economics.

S. 604 Call List For Week Of 9/21

September 21, 2009 By: Phred Category: Uncategorized

As yall know, I have been organizing an effort to flood the offices of Senators with phone calls in support of S. 604, the bill to require an audit of the Federal Reserve.  This effort has been successful–there are hundreds of people making phone calls in support of this bill every day.  There are now 28 Senators who have signed on to sponsor this bill.  The House version of this bill has the support of 291 Congressmen, meaning that if it were brought up in Congress it would pass with a veto-proof majority!  We need 66 Senators to support the Senate bill for it to be veto proof (we will need 67 once Ted Kennedy’s seat is filled).

Here are some talking points for your conversations with Senatorial aides.

I recommend posting the following messages on Facebook or anywhere else you think would be a good place to spread this message. As I said above, we now have 28 sponsors and cosponsors of this bill in the Senate (and I know of two more Senators who support the bill but have yet to cosponsor it). We need to keep pushing if we want this bill to pass.

Please make your calls and pass this information onto your friends and family.

The Time Has Come: End The War In Afghanistan

September 01, 2009 By: Phred Category: Uncategorized

The War in Afghanistan will soon have been going on for 8 years with absolutely no end in sight.

Are we losing?  Maybe, maybe not.  But, it is clear that we are not winning.

A “surge” like President Bush’s successful strategy for turning around the Iraq War is unlikely to work in Afghanistan.

This War has cost hundreds of billions of dollars in Treasure and, more importantly, hundreds of honorable American lives.

I supported this War for a long time–pretty much everyone did at some point.  In November 2001, shortly after the War started, only 9% of Americans thought the War was a mistake.

But, changing situations create the need for changes in outlook, and often changes in policy.

Whether or not the War was a mistake, a majority of Americans now want our troops to leave Afghanistan.

We have not succeeded in dismantling al-Qaeda.  We have not captured Osama bin-Laden or many of the other high value targets.

The Soviet Empire’s premature end was due in part to its war in Afghanistan.  We should not allow history to repeat itself and bring an end to the mighty American Empire as well.

This Nation is hemmorhaging money, the economy is dismal.  It is time to stop spending so much of our National fortune on this War.  Our cost for this War will be paid back  over the next 3o years to China and others who have loaned us the money to fight.

Afghanistan’s government is crumbling and it now appears that Hamid Karzai, Afghanistan’s American backed Prime Minister may have engaged in ballot-stuffing and other measures of voter fraud to keep himself in power.  These actions are preciously the same that American officials have criticized Iran for taking.  By standing behind a government like this, we are implicitly voicing our approval of these actions.

This war has spilled over into Pakistan and has greatly destabilized a nation with nuclear weapons–threatening the security of the entire world in the process.

The anti-war left has recently been strangely silent over the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.  My assumption is that they have not wanted to create political problems for a President that they largely supported while he is trying to push through health care and environmental legislation also largely supported by this group.  With the health care and cap and trade bills headed for near-certain failure or at a least a major watering down, I suspect that the anti-war left will begin to be more vocal in its opposition to the War in Afghanistan again soon.

New polls show that the majority of Americans now oppose the War in Afghanistan.  President Obama’s approval ratings have now dropped to the mid-40-low 50’s range.  You can be certain that President Obama does not intend to sacrifice his popularity over a war that was started on President Bush’s watch.

In the coming months, President Obama soon announce his decisions on what to do about the War in Afghanistan.  Many policy analysts believe that the President will announce a large increase in the number of troops for Afghanistan.  This is exactly the wrong strategy.  President Obama should begin a massive withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan.  Im not saying that we shouldnt continue to hunt bin-Laden–I would favor leaving behind an extremely small and elite force to hunt terrorists and bring them to justice.  However, we should stop engaging in “nation building,” stop propping up Karzai’s corrput government, and stop fighting this War.  If other Nations wish to continue fighting this War without our aid, let them do so, but the United States government should cease spending the lives and the wealth of Americans on this War.

We can still leave Afghanistan honorably; it is time to do the right thing and bring our brave and heroic men and women home from Afghanistan.

Conscience Of A Libertarian

August 28, 2009 By: Phred Category: Uncategorized

When the publisher sent me 2008 Libertarian Party Vice Presidential nominee Wayne Allyn Root’s new book, “The Conscience of a Libertarian: Empowering the Citizen Revolution with God, Guns, Gambling & Tax Cuts” to review, I was naturally excited.

This book is a fast paced and energetic and offers many solutions, rather than just offering complaints about the current system. Root’s book hits the ground running, hitting high taxes, corporate welfare, bailouts, and the IRS on the opining pages of the introduction. This early parts of this book are refreshing made me very excited about Mr. Root’s future prospects.

In my opinion, 2009 is quite early to be publishing a 2012 campaign book. However, it is more understandable for a “3rd party” candidate to publish a campaign book this early than it would be for a Democrat or a Republican to do so. Wayne Allyn Root offers a [somewhat] realistic plan for his political future. He plans on winning around 2-5 million votes in 2012, getting “Ross Perot numbers” in 2016, and being elected in 2020. While the odds of a Libertarian Party candidate winning the Presidency any time soon are slim, Mr. Root’s plan is at least somewhat realistic.

Conscience of a Libertarian offers numerous examples to show how broken the system really is and how inefficient the government can be. Here is my favorite example:

“The most famous brothel ever was the Mustang Ranch run by Joe Conforte. Mr. Conforte made more than $100 million, and paid taxes on very little of his fortune. He was indicted for income tax evasion and escaped to Brazil as a fugitive from the U.S. Government. The IRS seized the Mustang Ranch and rather than selling it, decided to keep running it. In less than a year, under government management, the same brothel that produced profits of more than $100 million went broke! Bankrupt. Out of business. Can you imagine? The federal government can’t even run a brothel!!! Yet we allow the same corrupt, incompetent government to run our economy and schools.”

The book contains many similar examples of the government bungling things while the private sector is able to succeed doing similar tasks at a lower cost.

Wayne Allyn Root is angry and it shows in this book. While this is refreshing and pumps the reader up early on, by the end of the book it seems more like angry ranting than energetic ideas.

I have major problems with quite a few of the proposals Mr. Root makes in this book. One such proposal is to increase the number of Congressmen so that no member of the House of Representatives represents more than 100,000 Americans (down from an average of around 700,000 today). This proposal sounds good—until you realize that doing so would increase the size of the House to over 3,000 members! This would turn our National legislature into nothing more than a circus.

Another of Root’s proposals is a [so-called] two tiered flat income tax. An income tax with two different rates based on income levels is by definition a graduated tax, not a flat tax. But it gets worse: Mr. Root “propose[s] a flat tax rate of 15 percent on any and all income up to $500,000 per year; then a 10 percent flat tax on any and all income above $500,000.” I am philosophically and morally opposed to all income taxes, yet this income tax is regressive—it will tax a McDonald’s worker at a higher rate than it would tax Bill Gates. Regardless of whether or not this plan is even a good idea, I would argue that there is a zero percent chance of the public supporting it.

A third such plan is for the government to collect no taxes for an entire year—and still continue to function. This would cost trillions of dollars, even if Root was able to drastically cut spending. In his own words regarding the three plans above: “Does it cost trillions of dollars? Sure it does.”

This leads me to my next point: while I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, I was left with one very important question: is Wayne Allyn Root a libertarian? My personal opinion is that he is not a libertarian, but rather a very conservative, limited-government Republican who feels betrayed by his party.

Rather than pushing for the elimination of all corporate income taxes, Mr. Root advocates cutting these taxes to “20 percent (or lower),” yet at the same time he advocates cutting corporate income taxes for small businesses to 10%. This would create a nightmare situation where mid-sized corporations would attempt to do things like move money overseas, lobby for changes in the definition of small business, or could even create disincentives for small businesses to grow into larger ones.

At times, Mr. Root even openly advocates corporate welfare. He pushes for a plan that would create “a $7,500 tax credit that goes directly to any employer who hires a new fulltime employee during the next three years, increasing to $10,000 if the person they hire was out of work at the time.”

Plans like these are typical conservative Republican plans, not libertarian ones. Libertarians are naturally very principles and are very unwilling to compromise on major issues. If Mr. Root has already strayed so far from orthodox libertarian ideas, how much more will his views be compromised when he has to deal with a Congress that is highly unlikely to support libertarian ideas.

I guess I do recommend reading this book, however, I would recommend it more to my conservative friends than I would to my libertarian ones. It does have a lot of great ideas in it and is a quick, energetic read.   Additionally, the first half truly was excellent.  However, as you read it, ask yourself if Wayne Allyn Root is a libertarian, or just another Conservative Republican.

Phred Barnet
