We are making good progress towards getting this bill more support.  We have to keep up the effort!  The Senate is still preoccupied with the health care debate, but a vote is expected on that issue soon, meaning that there will be more time for Senators to focus on passing S 604.

Now that the Senate is back from their long recess, I want to restart the Audit the Fed Bill Phonebombing.  Here are some talking points as well.

I recommend posting the following messages on Facebook or anywhere else you think would be a good place to speard this message.  We now have 25 sponsors and cosponsors of this bill in the Senate (and I know of two more Senators who support the bill but have yet to cosponsor it). We need to keep pushing if we want this bill to pass.

Jim Bunning, the current Senator from Kentucky has decided not to run for reelection in 2010, leaving an open field in both the Democratic and Republican primaries.

Rand Paul, the son of Congressman Ron Paul has decided to run for Senator Bunning’s seat.

Rand Paul is not just a son of a Congressman following in his father’s footsteps.  He has been very involved in Kentucky politics for the last 15 years.  He founded a group called Kentucky Taxpayers United in 1994 and has run the organization ever since.  Under Rand Paul’s leadership, this organization has become very influential in influencing State legislators to push for lower taxes.  Rand Paul is a strong supporter of Austrian Economics as well.

Rand Paul is also a successful doctor, and understands the health care issue very, very well:

Dr. Paul’s supporters are holding a moneybomb for his campaign tomorrow.  The recent moneybomb for Peter Schiff was successful–he raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in a single day.  Tomorrow, Dr. Paul’s supporters are hoping that his moneybomb can raise over $1 million–becoming the first Senate campaign to raise $1 million in a single day.  We can make this happen, but only if those who favor free markets are willing to invest a little money.  A small donation–even $10 will help Dr. Paul win what is sure to be an expensive primary battle.

Things are already gearing up for next years Congressional elections.  A number of incumbents from both major parties are extremely vulnerable.

One of the most vulnerable Senators is Chris Dodd from Connecticut.  Dodd, a Democrat is being scrutinized for being involved in a number of major scandals.  Chris Dodd received a VIP loan from Countrywide while serving on the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.  According to recent testimony, Senator Dodd knew that he was receiving a VIP loan.  He denies this.  Regardless of whether or not he knew that he was getting a loan below market rates, he did receive this loan (I find it difficult to believe that a member of the Senate committee in charge of regulating mortage firms did not know what the market rates were) and this is weighing heavily on his popularity.

Additionally, Senator Dodd was diagnosed with prostate cancer last week.  There are now rumors that he will step down due to his medical and political woes.

Enter Peter Schiff.

Peter Schiff is a stockbroker who owns Euro Pacific Capital.  He is well schooled in Austrian Economic theory, and is highly intelligent.  He holds strong free market views and was Ron Paul’s economic adviser during his Presidential campaign last year.  On top of that, he correctly predicted this current financial mess with amazing accuracy 3 years ago.

This video is quite interesting.  Watch how they literally laugh at him when he makes predictions about the cause and direction of the stock market.  The man was right.  We need a Senator like Peter Schiff who has a deep understanding of economics and knows that government actions (no matter how benevolently intentioned) have consequences.  He is running for Senate in Connecticut as a Republican and has a real chance of winning (he trails Dodd by only 4% with over a year before the election and is still relatively unknown).

On Friday, August 7th Peter Schiff supporters across the Nation are having a moneybomb.  For those of you who dont know what that means, a moneybomb is a grassroots effort where supporters of a candidate donate to that candidate on the same day.  Thousands of small donations combine and equal hundreds of thousands of dollars, possibly reaching a million or more.

I am asking everyone who believes sound economic policy and limited Constitutional government to participate in this moneybomb.  On Friday, please visit http://www.schiffathon.com/ and make a small (or large) donation to Mr. Schiff’s campaign–$17.76, $25, $50, or more.  Whatever you can spare.  This man has a real shot at winning, but cant do it without you!

I want to give those of you who have never called a Senator’s office some talking points for how to get your message across when you call.  My conversations seem to follow this pattern:

I usually say something like “hello, i am calling to find out if the Senator has decided to support Senate bill 604.”

There is usually a pause or they ask what bill that is.

I let them know that it is the bill to audit the federal reserve.

Then they usually tell me that the Senator hasnt released a statement on the bill yet, but that they’d be happy to pass along my opinions on the bill.

So I say something like “I think that Senator (XXXX) should absolutely support this bill. this bill is about transparency.  I think its a good thing for Americans to know where the trillions of dollars in bailout money has gone.

Then I reference how Democratic representative Alan Grayson asked Ben Bernanke which foreign central banks received $500 billion in money from the Federal Reserve and Ben Bernanke–the Chairman of the Federal Reserve did not know.  I tell them to check out one of the youtube clips of this testimony (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJqM2tFOxLQ&NR=1).

I reiterate the point that this bill is about transparency, and then I remind them that the Federal Reserve is a private institution that controls our Nation’s money supply and that it has never been audited in its 95 year history and that the American people deserve to know what happening with our money.

Then i say something like “please let the Senator know that I would really appreciate it if he would support this bill, thank them and then get off the phone.  It usually takes about a minute and a half or less.  Easy stuff.

As I said on Friday, I started an effort to bombard Senators’ offices with phone calls to let them know about this bill.  Hundreds of calls are being made for this effort daily.  If you are on Facebook, please consider adopting the following statuses this week.  If you arent on Facebook, please get the word out about this bill and the effort to call these Senators any way that you can.

For those of you who havent read the bill, here it is.  The bill itself  is 335 words (337 if you count the words “a bill) and has no scary legalese to it..
